“Chanfirmation” (aka Confirmation)
Grades 10-12
Teacher: Cantor Marcus Feldman & Clergy

Chanukah: a celebration of the rededication of the Temple. Confirmation: a celebration of the rededication of ourselves to Judaism.
Chanfirmation: A 5-session course where we'll explore our relationship with G-d, Faith, and the Jewish community through music, art, poetry, and prayer - culminating in a Chanfirmation service on December 11th!

Yesh Li Opinion
Teacher: Matt Baram

There are two things you’re not supposed to talk about at the dinner table - religion & politics. Well, you’re darn right we don’t have a dinner table. In this class, we will learn about the hard hitting issues affecting the Jewish community in 2012, and we’ll argue and debate these issues until we’ve thrown out our initial conclusions and come up with 5 or 6 way more complicated answers. Have an opinion? Come, share it, debate it, and say with conviction “Yesh Li Opinion.”

Cooking With Culture
Teacher: Chani Kracoff

Jewish Culture is so beautiful because of the many ethnic cultures it is made up of. This exciting cooking course will highlight the symbolic food items represented from the different ethnicities around the world and their connection to our tradition. Each ethnicity has a story to tell and what better way to tell that story than with a hands-on journey through cooking. Like with every culture, enjoying traditional cuisine is part of our nature! We will learn about the significance of the ingredients, preparation, and tastes of each food item while we cook them in class together. When we’re done, we can enjoy our own creations or share them with friends. Get ready for a tasty journey of Judiasm around the world!

Let God Decide
Teacher: Rabbi Fruithandler / Rabbi Guzik

Life is full of complicated and tough decisions. Everything from what to wear to what school I should go to. Judaism teaches us that each of us is made in the image of God. We will examine Jewish tradition for clues about how to tap into that part of ourselves that is created in the image of God. In this class we will look at ways to make decisions we are proud of.

Picture This, Picture That
Teacher: Matt Baram

Through most of our Jewish lives we’ve learned how Judaism can be expressed through language, prayer, song, video, dance and arts & crafts. But in this class, using the renowned “Jewish Lens” curriculum created by photographer Zion Ozeri, we will learn to express our Judaism through photography. For every picture a meaning;  for every meaning a Torah lesson. We will also be learning some basic photography and editing skills, and by the end of the semester will create an art exhibit to be displayed proudly in the halls of Sinai Temple.

Vertical Reality
Grades 10 - 12
Teacher: Richard Weintraub

Vertical Reality represents the re-discovery of our inner life. Love and Fear are the only emotions in the world; love is authentic and fear is an illusion. We are engaged in a covenant or partnership which
requires listening for the voice of G-d and to acting in a loving, non-fearful way toward ourselves and others. The class is a unique blending of interactive discussions and activities. The only requirement is an open mind and heart.

Once Upon A SiHi
Teacher: Matt Baram

Open your mind, let creativity flow and join a long list of prestigious Jewish authors as you create the next great Jewish Children’s book right here at SiHi! In this brand new SiHi class, each SiHier is going to learn about the many Jewish values and then write and illustrate their very own Jewish children’s book! At the end of the class we will test out our material by reading our books to the children of Sinai Temple and all of our stories will also be on display in the Blumenthal Library!

Israeli Cinema and You!
Teacher: Chani Kracoff / Anat Gerber

Have you ever seen a movie that really made you think? Or truly felt the emotions that the characters in a movie were conveying? Movies are a powerful tool. They enable us to go places, see things, learn, and sometimes cope with difficult issues. Foreign films are always interesting because they also add insight into different cultures and Israeli films are a prime example. In this course, we will cover some amazing film clips in Israeli cinema. We will discuss their powerful themes and the way they affect us personally. Look out for our class blog!

Moses-Aaron Cooperative &
Working with Special Needs Students

Teacher: Sinai & Vista Del Mar Staff
For the second year, Sinai Temple is partnering with Vista Del Mar to provide an opportunity for children with special needs to be a part of the Religious School and have a bar/bat mitzvah at Sinai Temple!  SiHi students who participate in this class will have the chance to participate in the Moses-Aaron Cooperative, a program which uses live presentation, music, Q&A, and storytelling to allow us to hear the thoughts and wisdom of students with autism.  In the Torah, Moses has a difficult time speaking, and thus needed Aaron, his brother, to be his “voice”.  The Moses- Aaron cooperative seeks to bridge the gap between those with autism (particularly those who are non-verbal) within the Jewish and larger community by providing them with an “Aaron” to share their words and a framework in which to share them.  Students who apply for this elective will have the chance to learn more about working with children who have special needs and will have hands on experience helping these children learn about Hebrew, Judaica, and bnai mitzvah prep. Questionnaire must be filled out. Not all students who apply will be accepted. Space is limited to 4 students. Students are encouraged to come every Sunday.

Sinai Temple is a partnership between its clergy, staff, lay leaders and devoted members who are committed to supporting the tradition and vision of Sinai Temple. Your gift to Sinai Temple will enable us to continue these holy tasks for years to come. Thank you for helping us to bring our history, our beliefs and our promise to a new generation.
We are a member of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs. We aim to provide a framework within which men can broaden their knowledge and understanding of the history and values of our people and in which they can make tangible contributions of their talents and treasure in an environment of good fellowship.
Our goal at Sinai Temple is to create a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program that is a spiritual and religious experience counseling child and family to God, the Jewish people and to each other.
The Sinai Temple Israel Center is the first synagogue center that provides programmatic resources and avenues for Los Angeles Jewry to establish cultural, professional, spiritual, and economic ties to the land of Israel.
Sinai Temple's 20's & 30's Community
